Originally concerned with infants and children it expanded to include adolescence, adult development, ageing, and the entire lifespan. Limitations in this body of research as well as directions for future research are discussed.ĭevelopmental psychology is the branch of psychology and the scientific study of how people grow and change over the course of a lifetime. In contrast, children and adolescents in families with high emotional support or low conflict seem to be protected from developing stress regulatory problems. Overall, the studies reviewed suggest that poor-quality family environments, including those characterized by low emotional support or high conflict, are associated with dysregulated stress responses throughout childhood and adolescence. Multiple measures of stress responses are considered, including both physiological and emotional responses to and recovery from stressful experiences. However, in recognition of the more complicated and interconnected nature of family relationships, also reviewed are associations between the broader family context and children& amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp #39 s stress responses. Family relationships explored are primarily dyadic, representing the emphasis of past empirical research these include parent-parent, parent-child, and sibling relationships. In this chapter, the theoretical and empirical associations between family relationships and children& amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp amp #39 s responses to stressors are reviewed.

Thus the paper provides a synthesis of the wealth of theory and research within positive developmental psychology, offering a much-needed overview of this burgeoning new field, and setting out a comprehensive research agenda for the years ahead. The paper offers a narrative review of selected literature within these areas – highlighting key theoretical concepts, empirical studies and applied interventions – doing so through the prism of a multidimensional framework. As such, the current paper introduces the overarching notion of positive developmental psychology, an umbrella term encompassing these intersecting developmental disciplines. However, until now, there has not been a systematic appreciation of these various developmental paradigms, nor an attempt to consider them as a whole. These include positive parenting, positive education, positive youth development, and positive aging. As positive psychology has matured as a discipline, sub-fields have emerged focusing on particular areas, including a number concentrating on specific life stages.
